Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
